Kahuna of Light: The World of Hawaiian Spirituality
Published in Paperback by Inner Traditions Intl Ltd (February, 2001)
Author: Moke Kupihea
Average review score:

I bought this book because of my interest in HUNA
I bought this book because of my interest in Hawaiian Spirituality, and wanted to read material written by a native Hawaiian instead of a ha'ole's perception of Hawaiian spirituality. I was sadly mistaken in that hope.

This book is an autobiography instead of a guide book to help people understand Hawaiian Spirituality or practise it. the title "Kahuna of Light: The World of Hawaiian Spirituality" implies in my opinion; this is supposed to be a guide book.

Wah doh Ogedoda (We give thanks Great Spirit)

Examines the world of Hawaiian spirituality
Kahuna of Light examines the world of Hawaiian spirituality, examining Hawaiian spiritual traditions and written by a descendant of the ancient Hawaiian priesthood line. Kupihea calls for a return to Hawaiian spiritual rituals of the past: Kahuna of Light blends his own story with the teachings of his ancestors.

Kahuna Religion of Hawaii

If you are interested in HUNA; keep looking.
This volume is only 59 pages in length, and does not contain nearly enough information about what the kahunas believed and practised.

For a HUNA reading list; please see me HUNA listmania list. Two Bears.

Wah doh Ogedoda (We give thanks Great Spirit)

A UNIQUE CLASSIC IN KAHUNAISM
THIS BOOK IS SHORT BUT SWEET. IT IS HISTORICAL AND PRICELESS IN MY OPINION SINCE A TRUE KAHUNA WROTE IT. KAHUNA BRAY'S PHILOSOPHY IS OUTLINED BY LOW. IN MY EXTENSIVE READING ON RELIABLE SOURCES OF KAHUNAISM (NANA I KE KUMU,MALO, I'I, KAMAKAU, KUPIHEA, MELVILLE,JOURNALS,ETC), THIS BOOK FILLS IN MANY GAPS AND IS A GREAT ADDITION TO ONE'S KNOWLEDGE ON HAWAIIAN CULTURE AND KAHUNAISM. I AM A NATIVE HAWAIIAN PHYSICIAN PUBLISHED ON TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN MEDICINE AND CONSIDER THIS BOOK A KEEPER.

Memories of Duke: The Legend Comes to Life
Published in Paperback by Island Book Shelf (July, 1996)
Authors: Sandra Kimberley Hall and Greg Ambrose
Average review score:

great pictures and quotes
Memories of Duke is a great book to find out about Duke Kahanamoku. In this book there are many pictures of Duke from his first swim at Alakea Slip in 1911 to his death in 1968. The book is broken very nicely into five sections. Each section represents a different aspect of his life. For instance, one chapter on swimming, surfing, ambassador, etc. This book is filled with quotes from people who knew Duke or Newspaper articles. This book is just an organization of Duke's life. I think that it could have been better if the authors added more of their views instead of everybody elses. Other wise this book is a great book to own.

Duke = Aloha, Aloha = Duke...
Revealing interviews, as well as many never before published photographs, allow "Memories of Duke" to show the reader know what a better place the world is for having had Duke Kahanamoku in it, and takes the edge off the bitter-sweet sorrow of not having known the man in person. The research done by Ms. Hall and veteran surfing reporter Ambrose is amazing, and the result well deserves the high praise given it by Duke's widow Nadine, (who wrote the foreword) and family and friends of Duke who say the book captured him as he really was. Has received awards from Okekai for Hawaii-Japanese Friendship, and the Hawaii Publishers Association. Considered to be a "must" for any library collection by the Friends of the Hawaii State Library, I add to that my insistence that no collection of Hawaiiana or surfing will be complete until this book is part of it. Mahalo nui loa to Hall and Ambrose for their fine work.

Search for Pele CD ROM
Published in CD-ROM by Digital Werks (01 November, 1997)
Author: Serge Kahili King
Average review score:

Could be a little longer
Overall, I enjoyed this CD-ROM. While presented as a game, there is no way to actually lose. Mostly, its just a peek into the geography and culture of one of the Hawaiian islands. There are many pictures included but the majority seem to pictures of trails that don't hold much interest. I would have liked to see more culture presented; tattooing, basket-making out of fronds, fishing, sugar-cane, coffee, waterfalls, food, customs, etc.

Entertaining and artistic; educational and fun!
The legends of Pele are known throughout Polynesia. Her fiery temperament and travels have been the source of many mele (songs, chants) and hula (dances) for centuries in Island lore. It is said that she traveled the Hawaiian Island chain until she found her resting place on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she can still be seen today in the great volcano and molten lava.

Your adventure begins on this magical island as you are awakened by a dancing flame; the spirit of Pele, who seeks your help. She has been out surfing all day and the rainbow she traveled on has broken into pieces and has gotten scattered across the island. The sisters and mother of Pele have found the pieces but cannot leave their volcano homes that they care for in Pele's absence.

You are the only one who can gather the pieces of the rainbow and bring them to Pele before her own home explodes without her attention. With guidance from Pele's father, other friends and relatives, you embark on a journey through the mists and rainforests, volcanoes and plains of the island to come to her aid. Each piece of the rainbow has its challenge, however, and you must have keen intuition to move forward. If not...

This CD is very rich in Hawaiian culture and tradition, giving you beautiful sights and sounds of the Islands as well as an adventure. Colorful graphics of the forests, volcanoes and water are intertwined with authentic sounds of the ipu (gourd drum), chants and exotic birds of the area. Mythical figures come to life as you journey and theirs is a wisdom and education you will not find in any school. You will be enchanted by the coming to life of Kanaloa, the sea god, as he emerges from the body of mano (shark, dolphin) in you water adventure. You can almost feel the heat of the lava as you cross the volcanic fields.

This is a game for the entire family and will be approximately two hours of adventure, enlightenment and whole-hearted fun.

Teebox Hawaii Golf Guide: The Comprehensive Source for Playing Golf in Hawaii
Published in Paperback by Teebox (February, 1994)
Author: Stephan Harper
Average review score:

The only consolidated guide to golf courses in Hawaii
This is an excellent, single source of information for all golfers interested in Hawaiian golf courses. The main drawback at this point is that it needs to be updated (hint!). The guide is concise and well organized. It would be useful to both the visitor to Hawaii as well as to the local clientele who want to venture onto courses they've never tried.

Outstanding book--A must have for locals and tourists alike.
I'm a member of the military stationed here on the island of Oahu. I got this book as a gift from a friend and have used it, on numerous occasions, to research courses to play. I guess what I like most about the book is that it has all of the phone numbers for the courses it contains. I am waiting patiently (kinda) for the latest version to hit bookstores. I'll be one of the first to buy one.

Vacations Can Be Murder: The Second Charlie Parker Mystery (Charlie Parker Mystery, No 2)
Published in Hardcover by Intrigue Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Connie Shelton and Leslie Lenz
Average review score:

Hawaiian adventure
After a taxing investigation (no pun intended) CPA and part-time investigator Charlie Parker decides to take a vacation to Kauai. She takes a scenic helicopter ride with Drake Langston, but gets more than she bargains for when they come across a dead body in a remote place. Drake's fellow pilot, Mack, is in the wrong place at the wrong time and he is accused of the murder. Drake asks Charlie to help with the investigation, since local law enforcement officers seem reluctant to look for any further suspects. Charlie obliges and, as a result, her relationship with Drake begins to blossom. She pursues the investigation with fervor (how many people would be willing to interrupt their Hawaiian vacation for a side-trip to California?) and eventually finds herself confronted by the killer. Except for a few awkward moments, this is a well-written mystery which has enough red herrings to make it interesting and it keeps the reader guessing until the very end.

What happens to Ron's kids?
Probably beside the point but she mentions Ron having three children in this book. Paul has the wonderfully obnoxious Annie and Joe in "Deadly Gamble" (the worse a character is the better Shelton draws him). I started with "Partnerships Can Kill" and I don't remember Ron's children in that. Only one dog, with a walk-on part. Great scenery and Hawaii travelogue and helicopter lore. Long speeches by the murderer...are a little unconvincing.

Advance Force-Pearl Harbor
Published in Paperback by United States Naval Inst. (April, 2002)
Author: Burl Burlingame
Average review score:

"I attacked Pearl Harbor"
"Advance Force Pearl Harbor" by Burl Burlingame. Trade paperback-481 pages from Naval Institute Press in 2002 from the original in 1992.
. This book is outstanding and is the only book detailing the attack on Pearl Harbor by the submarine force of Japan in December of 1941 and specifically by the 5 mini-boats carried there by the larger I boats.
. The detail and the research are superb. From the letters written by the crewmembers to their families in the days immediately proceeding the attack to their life stories. The lone survivor's story is detailed. He did spend some time in a camp in Wisconsin during the war. He was still alive in 1991 after having spent many years in Brazil as an executive for Toyota.
..The book also tells the stories of the USS Ward's attack on the mini submarine outside the harbor entrance and of all the other destroyers and smaller craft that plied those waters during that period.
..In addition, the book is full of pictures of both U.S. and Japanese ships, submarines and personnel. It is strange that the book was released in this edition just before one of the boats was found in the waters off Pearl Harbor this year.
..I rate the book 4 of 5 and recommend it. It is also very easy to read because of its unique columnar format.

Ancient Hawaii Coloring Book
Published in Paperback by Bellerophon Books (October, 1992)
Author: Bellerophon Books
Average review score:

Ancient Hawaii
This coloring book turned out to not be quite what I had expected. It included many pictures of old Hawaiian gods and homes, and I was hoping for more pictures of ocean and beaches and more sweeping colorful pictures of what old Hawaii must have been like, and for more pictures of people from ancient Hawaii. It seemed more for adults than a kids' coloring book. Still, it is an interesting book.

Betrayal at Pearl Harbor: How Churchill Lured Roosevelt into World War II
Published in Hardcover by Summit Books (July, 1991)
Authors: James Rusbridger and Eric Nave
Average review score:

Substantiated Conspiracy Theory
The book was the proper length for the evidence put forth, although the final chapters were somewhat repetitive. Excellent description of the JN-25 system. This title belongs on the shelf of any historian interested in the US entry into WWII. That JN-25 had been read by the British had appeared previously, notably in the book "And I Was There" by Admiral Layton and have been ignored by mainstream historians. "Betrayal" forces the reader to reconsider the manipulations of the British whose conduct was clearly cost US lives. Continued British lying and secrecy surrounding the issue indicates that England wishes to wait for the WWII generation to quietly pass from the scene before they come clean.

Blues and Greens: A Produce Worker's Journal (Intersections (Honolulu, Hawaii).)
Published in Hardcover by University of Hawaii Press (April, 2000)
Author: Alan Chong Lau
Average review score:

Working Blues
This is a working person's book. Many of the poems have the feel of the poet writing notes on a small pad during brief breaks at work, imprinting observations about customers, workers, produce, clouds, items in the dumpster. The poems feel like a cross between Basho amd William Carlos Williams--the immediacy and sensitivity of haiku with the sharp eye of Dr. Williams. Lau further creates the working environment by intercutting announcements on the intercom. If you like the work poems of Philip Levine, you will like this book.
